- Keynote Title:"Communicating Scientific Knowledge: Is progress lagging?"
Brief Biography: Dr. David Lipman is the Director of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a division of the National Library of Medicine within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He was appointed as NCBI’s first Director in 1989, shortly after Congress created the Center in 1988, and has overseen its growth into one of the most heavily used resources in the world for the search and retrieval of biomedical information, with about two million users each day.
Dr. Lipman obtained a B.A. in Biology from Brown University in 1976 and an M.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1980. After medical training, Dr. Lipman joined the Mathematical Research Branch of the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) at NIH as a Research Fellow, studying molecular evolution and developing computational tools for sequence comparison. Dr. Lipman is one of the developers of the original BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) algorithm for rapidly identifying biological sequences that are similar to a queried sequence.
Dr. Lipman is the recipient of numerous awards and is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

-- The Perspectives of BioNLP Shared Tasks and GENIA"Brief Biography: Dr. Jun’ichi Tsujii received the BEng, MEng, and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Kyoto University, Japan, in 1971, 1973, and 1978, respectively. He was an assistant professor and associate professor at Kyoto University, before taking up the position of professor of computational linguistics at the University of Manchester Institute for Science and Technology (UMIST) in 1988.
Since 1995, he has been a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Tokyo. He is also a professor of text mining at the University of Manchester (half time) and the research director of the UK National Centre for Text mining (NaCTeM) . He was the president of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) in 2006 and is a permanent member of the International Committee on Computational Linguistics (ICCL) since 1992. He is the principal investigator in the GENIA project in Japan and the chair of the scientific committee of BioNLP Shared Task 2011.Registration [top]

For the proceedings that will be distributed at the meeting, You may write up to six pages total. We suggest at least two pages per task that you were involved in. Please use the BMC Bioinformatics template, available from their website. Please send your paper as a PDF on US letter-sized paper to kevin.cohen@gmail.com by Monday, Sept. 6.
